Prolife Car Rental Guide

Car rental gives you great freedom and flexibility wherever you travel; in some areas it's the only way you can travel a long distance where public facilities are poor. There are numerous car rental companies however, all claiming to have great deals, and identifying which vendor is best suited to your needs can be difficult. Costs can vary widely; if you just want a cheap run-around to get you from A to B without spending too much on petrol, you'll need to go for the smallest model available. A family or group will need a large vehicle, which will be more expensive to rent and will probably guzzle more gas too.

Length of rental - Which company you use for your car rental should be partly dependant on the length of time you want to hire a vehicle for. If you want the car for less than a week, you're best to use one of the major companies. If you're hiring for a longer time period, a local company at your destination may work out cheaper. The downside of using small, local companies is that they may lack the breakdown or accident support of the large companies, so if you are planning on doing a lot of driving, take this into consideration.

Search for discounts - You can look for special discount codes for car rental companies online. Simply type in the name of a company, followed by 'discount code' or 'coupon code' and if there's anything available out there, you'll come across it. These are often checkout codes which offer money off when you book online and can offer savings anywhere between 5 and 25 per cent.

Visit websites - While it's tempting to believe that a price comparison site will show you the cheapest prices, some things may not be included in the prices displayed, such as booking fees, and many car rental company websites offer deals of their own which you will only see if you visit their individual sites. If you're unsure of anything while booking online, call and make inquiries. It's important to understand the conditions of your car rental to avoid incurring extra costs. For example, would you be charged if you couldn't arrive to collect the car on the day agreed? How long will the vehicle be held if you cannot arrive at the agreed time? If you want to share driving, how much does it cost for an additional driver to be added?

Fuel - Save money by not opting for a full tank of petrol on collection. You'll pay an extra premium for this and although it's convenient, you'll save by simply driving straight to a petrol station and filling the tank yourself. Similarly, always make sure the car's returned to the rental company with the same amount of petrol it had when you collected it; if not, you'll be charged a fill-up fee by the company.
